Prompt #1: A Conflict Story

Misty Bennett was a vivacious, red-head who seemed to never stop being kind to everyone, even if they completely hated her or were her relatives. She was tall, green eyed, and very athletic. Her name was always on 1st or 2nd place medals in a variety of sports, ranging from soccer to baseball to horseback riding. Karina Delacour, on the other hand, was a short blonde who excelled in school and loved horseback riding and archery. She seemed to be popular but in truth, she only had one friend: Misty Bennett. Karina and Misty were best friends, like sisters.

In fact, they were sisters, and were only two weeks apart. They happened to be walking home one day from their high school when Karina realized her Algebra 2 textbook was missing. She couldn't believe it becuase she remembered putting it back in her backpack after Math, which was her last period of the day. Karina turned on Misty, surprising her.
"Did you take my Algebra 2 book, Misty?" Karina demanded. Misty arched a thin eyebrow. "No....Why would I take your Algebra 2 book when I'm in Algebra 1B?" Misty replied, shaking her head at her sister's accusation.
"Well, it's missing. It was right next to my laptop in my bag. I had put it right in my bag when I left math. You were right next to my bag earlier when we left." Karina scowled, searching her bag. Misty sighed and went to sit on a park bench. Karina followed, still searching her bag.
"Is it in your locker?" Misty asked, watching Karina pull papers, books, and her laptop out of her bag.
"No." Karina snapped, throwing everything back in her bag uncermoniously and grabbing Misty's schoolbag.
"Karina!" Misty lunged for her bag but Karina pulled it out of reach. Karina started to go through everything in it, pulling various textbooks out.
"Karina, stop it!" Misty yelled, snatching her bag back. Karina held up Misty's Algebra book, examining it carefully. Without warning, she yanked the cover off, revealing the hard cover, which was titled "Algebra 2"!
"Misty, why do you have my book?! You told me that you did not have it and I trusted your word on it!" Karina's narrowed eyes flashed with anger at her sister. Misty lowered her head in shame, which she never used to do, especially to her younger sister.
"I....wanted to use it." Misty mumbled, unable to meet Karina's fuming gaze.
"I don't believe that." Karina replied. "We're going home and maybe we can discuss this with Father and Scarlett."
Karina and Misty's mother had died several years before and then their father married a woman named Scarlett, who was similar to the girls' birthmother. The girls had not quite gotten used to calling Scarlett "mother". The girls arrived at their house in angry silence to find that only Scarlett and their oldest sister, Angelina, were home. Angelina had barricaded herself in her room, doing homework. Angelina was a senior while Misty and Karina were sophomores. She hardly spent time at home but that didn't bother the girls. Scarlett was bustling about the kitchen, preparing dinner for the family. Scarlett looked up when she heard the girls enter the house in complete silence.
"Hi girls! How was your day?" Scarlett smiled, pulling off her apron.
"Fine..." Misty mumbled, sitting down at the kitchen table. Karina slammed her bag down, not responding. Scarlett detected the silent anger resonating from Karina and the silence between the girls and she sat down automatically between them.
"What's the matter, girls? You two never come home angry at each other." Scarlett asked quietly.
"Nothing's wrong." Karina replied, rearranging her face so it had a pseudo smile, unknown to Scarlett.
"Karina accused me of stealing her Algebra 2 book..." Misty said, unwilling to lie to her stepmother.
"Karina, why did you-" Scarlett began but Karina cut her off angrily.
"She did have my math book! I found it in her bag." Karina looked on the brink of hysteria and Misty looked on the verge of tears. Misty was a very sensitive and shy girl, unlike Karina, who was outgoing and not very sensitive to situations like the present one the girls were in. Scarlett looked at Misty, who sighed.
"Misty, why did you take it?" Scarlett asked.
"Because a friend needed it....." Misty whispered timidly, afraid to look at her angry sister and kept her eyes locked on her stepmother.
"Why didn't you ask me?" Karina asked calmly. She had cooled off a bit.
"I thought you would say no....." Misty looked at Karina with eyes that asked for her forgiveness.
"If someone needed it, I would of let them use it with my permission." Karina smiled. "Next time don't be afraid to ask." Misty nodded and Karina leaned over and hugged Misty.
"I forgive you...." Karina whispered in Misty's ear.
"Thanks." Misty and Karina picked their bags up and the girls walked upstairs, arm-in-arm, giggling about their "fight".
